Fleming County Holds Off Harrison County 20-16

A Friday night in Cynthiana, KY, Fleming County held on to beat Harrison County 20-16 in the 16th meeting between the two teams.

The Panthers moved to 2-0 on the season, while the Thorobreds dropped to 0-2.

Harrison got on the board first in the opening quarter. After Ashton Gaunce recovered a Fleming County fumble, Harrison took over with good field position. Gaunce then scored on a 24-yard run to give the Thorobreds the lead. Harrison’s two-point try was unsuccessful.

Fleming answered with a touchdown of its own. Jackson Jones scored on a 10-yard run, which was his first touchdown of the season. The Panthers also missed their two-point attempt, leaving the game tied.

Fleming added another touchdown before halftime to take a 12-6 lead into the locker room.

Fleming’s offense was led by its running game throughout the night. The Panthers finished with 363 total yards, including 341 rushing yards and 22 passing yards. Jett Martin led Fleming with 133 rushing yards, while Blake Everage finished with 128 yards.

Harrison finished with 45 total yards, including 38 rushing yards and seven passing yards.

The Thorobreds cut into Fleming’s lead in the second half with a safety, making the score 12-8. Both teams continued to battle for field position as the game moved into the fourth quarter.

Fleming added another score early in the fourth quarter to make it 18-16. The Panthers’ two-point attempt was unsuccessful.

Harrison then had several chances to change the game.

Later in the fourth quarter, Bracken King recovered a Fleming County fumble, giving Harrison possession and a chance to take the lead. The Thorobreds moved the ball down the field, but Fleming’s defense was able to stop the drive.

Harrison got another opportunity late in the game. With 1:48 remaining, a bad snap gave the Thorobreds the ball at the Fleming 32-yard line.

With about 40 seconds left, Harrison threw toward the right side of the field, but Everage came up with an interception. Fleming took over and ran out the clock to finish the 20-16 win.

Fleming finished the game with three lost fumbles, while Harrison recovered its only fumble.

The Panthers leave Cynthiana with a 2-0 record, while Harrison County will look to bounce back in its next game against the Bourbon County Colonels.
