North Oldham began its Class 4A District 3 title defense in dominant fashion on the road, shutting out host Doss 42-0 on Thursday night.
The Mustangs (5-1, 1-0) scored touchdowns on three of their first five plays from scrimmage, forced three more turnovers, and pitched their third shutout of the season as they won their fifth-straight game.
Senior quarterback Brodie Pfeiffer threw a career-high four touchdowns, two of them to fellow senior Jackson Davis, and running back Ronin Renton found pay dirt twice to lead the Mustang attack. Defensively, North racked up eight tackles for loss and forced as many turnovers (3) as plays allowed in their territory (3). Senior linebacker Brody Dressel led the Mustang defense with six tackles and three tackles for loss.
The Dragons (0-5, 0-1) opened the game with an onside kick that did not fool the Mustangs, and they took advantage of the short field in two plays with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Pfeiffer to Davis. On the third defensive snap of the game, Mustang senior Ethan Heady sacked Doss quarterback Jaden Wright and forced a fumble in the process, which was recovered by linebacker Connor Montgomery at the Dragon 9-yard line. On the first play of the ensuing possession, Pfeiffer flipped a quick screen out to Hudson Hackler, who shot up field for his third touchdown of the year.
It was off to the races from there as the Mustangs averaged 9.6 yards per play and scored 49 points in just 28 plays.
Renton ran for 61 yards on four carries, including a 21-yard scoring scamper, and added a 16-yard touchdown catch to move into third place all-time at North Oldham with 31 career touchdowns. His backfield mate Destin Lindsey also rushed for 61 yards and had a 21-yard touchdown run in the final moments of the second quarter. Pfeiffer finished the night 6-of-10 for 83 yards and four touchdowns.
The Mustangs pulled their starters at halftime with a 42-0 lead and a running clock. Freshman quarterback Ethan Brewer connected with Mantias Sosa for 38 yards during the second unit’s lone second-half possession, and freshman Kellan Harper led a stout second-wave defensive effort with four tackles. Sophomore Judah Cabal put the exclamation point on the Mustangs’ shutout with an interception return for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
It was the third shutout of the Mustangs’ current five-game winning streak, and since falling behind in the first half of the season opener, North is outscoring opponents 220-33 with a yardage advantage of 1,047 yards in the past 22 quarters.
North returns home next week for its lone home district game of the season against Breckinridge County, where they will also honor its 18-man senior class during pregame Senior Night festivities.
