A rowdy home crowd and a steady rushing attack led the Class 6A Lafayette Generals past North Oldham (9th 4A), 28-14, in the season opener for both teams.
The host Generals (1-0) received the opening kickoff and took it 80 yards in seven plays, all on the ground, and Tristan Thompson plowed in for a 1-yard score to put Lafayette in front, 7-0.
The North Oldham (0-1) offense, breaking in three new pieces on the offensive line and new quarterback Brodie Pfeiffer, struggled to find its groove throughout the night and went three-and-out in its first drive.
Lafayette continued to find success on the ground as junior running back Harrison Stephens ripped off a 56-yard touchdown run down the right side to put the Generals ahead 14-0.
The host Generals had five different players take snaps at quarterback, but sophomore Emannuel Onono was the most effective, completing four passes for 132 yards and a pair of scores.
A 39-yard strike over the middle to JJ Richardson extended the lead to three scores, and Richardson took a short pass for a 52-yard touchdown on the ensuing possession, and the Mustangs found themselves shocked, down 28-0.
Pfeiffer marched the Mustangs down the field in 44 seconds to close the first half, completing an 80-yard scoring drive with a touchdown toss to senior Conner Nesmith to bring North Oldham within 28-7 at the half.
The Mustangs drew within 28-14 with seven minutes left in the third quarter as Pfeiffer took a keeper up the middle for a 14-yard score, but the Generals were able to hold from there.
Two North Oldham fumbles inside the Generals’ 25-yard line in the closing moments of the third and early moments of the 4th proved to be the game-defining sequence as Lafayette held off the late Mustang charge.
The Mustangs only turned the ball over 7 times in all of 2025 and finished +32 in scoring margin. They turned it over 3 times and lost the turnover battle 3-1 in the opener.
A Mustang team that scored on 68% of its possessions in 2025 only found the end zone twice in 10 opportunities in the opener.
Richardson finished the night with 119 yards receiving and a pair of scores to lead the Generals, who racked up 323 total yards in the contest (191 rushing, 132 passing). Pfeiffer had 201 total yards (107 pass, 94 rush) and a pair of scores to spark the Mustangs offensively.
The loss snaps a four-game season-opening winning streak for North Oldham as the Mustangs start 0-1 for the first time in the Brock Roberts era. The Mustangs will look to rebound in its home opener next Friday as 5A North Bullitt comes to town. The Generals travel to Henry County in Week 2 looking to start the season 2-0.
